1959 - _Love Song of Kalua_ - Ken Darby (words & music) - Archie Bleyer (orchestra) - from the motion picture _Bird of Paradise_ *Bird of Paradise* is a 1951 American adventure drama and romance film in Technicolor, produced and directed by Delmer Daves, and starring Debra Paget, Louis Jourdan, and Jeff Chandler. The screenplay was also written by Daves based on the 1912 play by Richard Walton Tully. The film was distributed by 20th Century-Fox. Plot: An island Princess falls for a visiting Frenchman, but her people are against it. Cast: Debra Paget (Kalua) ~ Louis Jourdan (André Lawrence) ~ Jeff Chandler (Tenga) ~ Everett Sloane (The Akua) ~ Maurice Schwartz (The Kahuna) ~ Jack Elam (The Trader) ~ Prince Leilani (Chief) ~ Otto Waldis (Skipper) ~ Alfred Zeisler (Van Hook) Production: 20th Century Fox announced the film in May 1950. It reunited several personnel from _Broken Arrow_ including Debra Paget, Delmer Daves and Jeff Chandler. Chandler joked that his character was just a variation on his performance as Cochise in _Broken Arrow._ _"The story is really about a conflict of worlds in 1850: a primitive people who live by their beliefs and the civilization - in quotes - brought by the white man. The problem is never resolved; even marriage can't do it - but... we used some wonderful locations, and the scenery is breathtakingly beautiful."_ Daves claims that he wrote "a practically new story" from the earlier play. The film was shot on location in Hawaii beginning in August 1950. Key locations were Hanalei Bay, Waikiki, Kona Coast and Volcano. Chandler flew back Los Angeles every weekend in order to fulfill his radio commitment to _Our Miss Brooks._ O'ahu native Queenie Ventura (née Dowsett), who was half pure Hawaiian and half Portuguese, joined the cast as a featured dancer and the local lead actress. Louis Jourdan and Jeff Chandler had to have their normally hairy chests shaved in order to appear in this movie. "Lux Radio Theater" broadcast a 60-minute radio adaptation of the movie on December 31, 1951, with Debra Paget, Louis Jourdan, and Jeff Chandler reprising their film roles. Remake of the 1932 film but does not include the nude swimming sequence of the original. The main female character also never appears topless, with a lei covering her breasts. Kenneth Lorin *"Ken" Darby* (May 13, 1909 - January 24, 1992) was an American composer, vocal arranger, lyricist, and conductor. His film scores were recognized by the awarding of three Academy Awards and one Grammy Award. He provided vocals for the Munchkinland mayor in _The Wizard of Oz_ (1939), who was portrayed in the film by Charlie Becker. Darby is also notable as the author of _The Brownstone House of Nero Wolfe_ (1983), a biography of the home of Rex Stout's fictional detective. Kenneth Lorin Darby was born in Hebron, Nebraska, on May 13, 1909, to Lorin Edward Darby and Clara Alice Powell. Darby was married to Vera Matson from 1932 to his death in 1992. Career Ken Darby's choral group, The Ken Darby Singers, sang backup for Bing Crosby on the original 1942 Decca Records studio recording of "White Christmas." In 1940 they also sang on the first album ever made of the songs from _The Wizard of Oz,_ a film on which Darby had worked. However, the album was a studio cast recording, not a true soundtrack album (although it did feature Judy Garland), and it did not use the film's original arrangements. Darby also performed as part of "The King's Men," a vocal quartet who recorded several songs with Paul Whiteman's orchestra in the mid 1930s and were the featured vocalists on the Fibber McGee and Molly radio program from 1940 through 1953. In the early 1940s, he performed with the King's Men a musical version of "A Visit from St. Nicholas" that he wrote called "T'was the Night Before Christmas" that was performed on the Christmas episodes of _Fibber McGee and Molly._ They also participated on the soundtracks of several MGM films, including _The Wizard of Oz_ and occasional _Tom and Jerry_ cartoons. The King's Men portrayed the Marx Brothers in a musical spoof in the film _Honolulu_ (Darby played one of two 'Grouchos' in the group). He also provided the theme song and the soundtrack for _The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp,_ the 1955-61 television series starring Hugh O'Brian, and _The Adventures of Jim Bowie_ starring Scott Forbes. He was a composer and production supervisor for Walt Disney Studios and was choral and vocal director on the 1946 Disney film classic _Song of the South._ He was also Marilyn Monroe's vocal coach for _Gentlemen Prefer Blondes_ (1953) and _There's No Business Like Show Business_ (1954). Darby was also the principal composer of the 1956 Elvis Presley hit "Love Me Tender" for the movie of the same name but signed the rights over to his wife, Vera Matson, whose name appears as co-lyricist and co-composer with Presley. The song was adapted from the Civil War-era song "Aura Lee." Presley's composing credit was mandated by his management, to entice him to record the song. Darby was often asked about his decision to credit the song to his wife along with Presley, and his standard response was an acid, "Because she didn't write it either." A fan of Nero Wolfe, Rex Stout's fictional detective genius, Darby wrote a biography of Wolfe's home titled _The Brownstone House of Nero Wolfe_ (1983). Ken Darby died January 24, 1992, in the final stages of production of his last book, _Hollywood Holyland: The Filming and Scoring of 'The Greatest Story Ever Told'_ (1992). He was buried at the Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills Cemetery in Los Angeles.
